FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What types of coatings will Soy-Gel remove?
Soy-Gel has proven to remove most coatings including lead-based paints, enamels, oil and water based latex, varnishes, urethanes, and solvent and water based concrete sealers.
Will Soy-Gel work on vertical sufaces?
Yes, Soy-Gel is a gel formula that works great on both horizontal and vertical surfaces.
How do I apply Soy-Gel?
For small jobs you can apply Soy-Gel with an inexpensive paint brush and glob it onto the surface. Be careful not to apply too thin. For larger applications, you can apply Soy-Gel with a straw broom, commercial airless sprayer (tip 519 or greater and pressure setting of 3000 PSI or higher), rake/notched squeegee (1/4" - 1/2".), or a gauge rake (1/16" - 1/8"). Again, be careful not to apply Soy-Gel too thin. Also check out Franmar's new product Soy-Gel Spray, which is designed to be applied with an HVLP sprayer. The HVLP sprayer should be a 3-stage turbine or higher and a 2.5 mm tip/needle in an HVLP spray gun is recommended.
Will Soy-Gel remove multiple coatings?
Yes, Soy-Gel has been proven to remove upwards of 20+ coatings in one application. The number of coatings to be removed in one application depends on the thickness of Soy-Gel and the amount of time it is left on the surface. Make sure to leave Soy-Gel on long enough for it to penetrate all the coatings.
How do I know how thick to apply Soy-Gel?
Apply Soy-Gel thicker than the coatings you wish to remove. In most cases it is hard to tell how thick the coatings are. Best results are achieved by applying Soy-Gel between 1/16 in. and 1/8 in. thick and letting Soy-Gel sit until it has lifted all of the coatings.
How long do I let Soy-Gel sit before removing?
Test scrape the surface every 10-30 minutes to see if the coatings have lifted. Simple coatings like latex and urethanes take, on average, between 10-60 minutes. Epoxies and multiple layers of other coatings can take a few hours to overnight to lift. If applying outside, it is usually a good idea to cover with a thin mil plastic drop cloth to keep from drying out over an extended period of time.
What is the area of coverage for Soy-Gel?
Soy-Gel can cover upwards of 200 sq. ft. per gallon on a horizontal surface. To achieve the 200 sq. ft. per gallon coverage, an airless sprayer can be used and will generally only life one to two coating. Average coverages range between 50-100 sq. ft. per gallon on vertical surfaces and 75-175 sq. ft. per gallon on horizontal surfaces. Remember, the thicker you apply Soy-Gel, the more coatings it will remove. (Applying Soy-Gel very thin to remove 10 layers of paint, will not work.)
Will Soy-Gel remove stains on wood and concrete?
Soy-Gel is not designed to remove stains on wood surfaces. In some cases, it may lighten a stain on a wood surface. On concrete, Soy-Gel will not affect acid stains, but will remove antiquing effects from stamps, and will lighten water and solvent based stains.
Will Soy-Gel raise the grain of the wood?
Soy-Gel will not raise the grain of the wood. Cleaning with too much water may raise the grain of the wood.
How do I remove Soy-Gel once the coatings have softened?
Once the coating has softened, remove it using a scraper or other stripping tool. Then clean the surface with water or a degreaser. A wet vac can also be used to pick up Soy-Gel. Once coating is softened, mix a little water into the Soy-Gel on the surface and lightly scrub the surface with a long handled broom or brush. Then suck up the Soy-Gel and coatings with the wet vac. Clean the wet vac out VERY well after use. If Soy-Gel is left to long in the wet vac or not completely cleaned out it could damage the hose or even the wet vac.
Why is nothing happening?
The most common problem that occurs is that Soy-Gel is not left on the surface long enough to work or Soy-Gel is not put on thick enough. Generally, latex paint will lift much sooner than enamels. Because of Soy-Gel's amazing staying power, Soy-Gel will stay moist for several hours, and as long as it is moist it continues to work on the coated surface.
How do I dispose of Soy-Gel?
Soy-Gel is 100% biodegradable. Check with your local landfill or EPA office about disposal of the coatings you are stripping.
Will Soy-Gel remove a wax coating?
No. For removing wax coatings, use Franmar's EMERGE degreaser full strength and let sit for approximately 25 minutes before scrubbing.
Does Soy-Gel have a shelf life?
No
Can Soy-Gel be diluted?
No
